Having worked on westerns (3:10 to Yuma) and western-style superhero films (Logan), it's natural that Ford v Ferrari by director James Mangold exudes a similar nuance. Prioritizing two protagonists with a cowboy attitude (even one of them wearing a cowboy hat), this is like a more modern cowboy story, where instead of a horse, a Ford GT40 racing car is his mount.

When Henry Ford II (Tracy Letts) beard fires due to decreased car sales, Ford Vice President, Lee Iacocca (Jon Bernthal), suggested to the CEO that their company follow in the footsteps of Ferrari racing in the "24 Hours of Le Mans". According to Iacocca, the success of the car manufacturer owned by Enzo Ferrari (Remo Girone) won successive titles making it look superior until loved by the public.
Initially Ford intended to buy a Ferrari that was about to go bankrupt, but at the "final bend", Fiat overtook them. Offended by Enzo's refusal and insults, Henry changes the plan. Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) is appointed to make Ford a racing car that is faster than Ferrari. Shelby, who had won Le Mans in 1959 before retiring due to heart problems, also invited his colleague, Ken Miles (Christian Bale), an exceptionally talented racer who was often labeled bad due to his messy temper.
Shelby may open the story, and Matt Damon himself appears solid without being impressed "showy" like a steering wheel that controls the pace of the film, but the engine driving the Ford v Ferrari is Miles. In front of many people, gestures, expressions, until the way of speaking Bale really describes how Miles positioned himself above the other person. Especially when they have to compete with Leo Beebe (Josh Lucas), one of Ford's executives who will make the audience want to cast a raw punch to the smug smile of the corporate side that he always puts on his face.
Conversely, in an intimate space, both in the midst of solitude, behind the wheel of a car, and next to his family, Miles is a human being, who is feeling and often shows fragility. The dynamics of the Miles family is precisely the spirit of the film. Caitriona Balfe plays Mollie, Miles' wife who is supportive but not passive, and dares to speak up when her husband makes a mistake. While Noah Jupe is Peter, the son of Miles who really admires his father.
Manuscripts made by brothers Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth (Edge of Tomorrow, Get on Up) with Jason Keller (Mirror Mirror, Escape Plan) understand very well that the best sports drama is always a matter of the personal side of the culprit. As a result, the emotional moment of Ford v Ferrari is always a matter of the Miles family. When Miles' car explodes in a training session, we are invited to feel terror gripping a child who witnesses his father approaching death. Nor is it a technical discussion used to describe the extraordinarily long, long and challenging "24 Hours of Le Mans", but a heart to heart talk of Miles and Peter.
On the racetrack, it was James Mangold's turn to show off. All races are worked out to the maximum, no one is just hitching a ride. From the Daytona race to Le Mans each had a tension and euphoria. Assisted by his subscriber cinematographer, Phedon Papamichael, plus skillful editing, Mangold built the intensity through the placement of cameras that cover all sides. We know the conditions in the car including Miles' expression, track corners, and how the car drove there. As a backdrop, music composed by Marco Beltrami (The Hurt Locker, A Quiet Place) combines a variety of forms, from jazz touches (Ferrari Factory, Photos to Fiat) to adrenaline-boosting rock (Le Mans 66, Willow Sprints).
Exciting, tense, and emotional, Ford v Ferrari is not about the superiority of the two car manufacturers. Even to the end, the film still consistently criticized the corporate parties who do everything possible for their own benefit. Once again, the best sports drama always talks about the personal side of the culprit, and Ford v Ferrari managed to do that, highlighting the struggles of the two cowboy racecourse, making it one of the best in recent times.
