I personally believe that (with the exception of Brave) all of Pixar's films are good. Even their worst films are still a few leagues above the average animated fare put out by other studios. However, in a year where Illumination followed up Despicable Me with "James Marsden goes on a road trip with Russell Brand as a rabbit" and Kung Fu Panda 2 was outright stunning... ... I'd say that Cars 2 was arguably just a fun movie. Yes, this was the same movie that led to John Lasseter's eventual downfall, but at the same time, it's rather clear he had a lot of ideas for Cars as a franchise. In this movie's case, it was his passion project- a story about a tow truck voiced by Larry the Cable Guy, Michael Caine becoming 007 in car form (he's even an Aston Martin!) and a World Grand Prix. There are points where this seems a bit underdeveloped. There are points when things get needlessly convoluted. But does that stop it from being a fun movie? No, no it doesn't. Even with its faults, Cars 2 is still a very enjoyable ride. It acknowledges the insanity of its premise, it has those now-admittedly-kind-of-offensive "clueless American in a foreign country" jokes, and retains Pixar's high standards for visuals. If this wasn't a movie about talking cars living on Route 66, then this would probably be some spy movie could've actually been Pixar's first bomb. However, thanks to the automobile-centric angle the story has, it actually allows for even more gadgetry and fun visuals than an actual Bond film would be. I enjoyed it for that reason. It's silly, it can be immature at times, and it's not the smooth ride down the highway that is life the first movie was. But, with the right point of view, then it's a legitimately enjoyable movie.
