Blackhat (2015), The Huntsman: Winter’s War (2016), 12 Strong (2018), to Men in Black: International (2019). Chris Hemsworth's search for another "vehicle" he could ride to maintain his existence as a formidable figure in the realm of Hollywood blockbusters outside the MCU did not take place smoothly. But Extraction can be the answer. The adaptation of this Ciudad graphic novel has actually been funded since 2013, before the Russo Brothers wrote their history in the comic book movie scene through Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014).
The Russo Brothers collaborated with Ande Parks, Fernando Leon Gonzalez, and Eric Skillman when they made Ciudad. As for the film, both served as producers, while Joe wrote the script alone. The directing chair was handed over to Sam Hargrave, who was the stunt coordinator at Captain America: Civil War (2016) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). Hargrave also continued the positive trend of stunt experts who were able to produce qualified action films as directors.
Hemsworth plays Tyler Rake, a former member of the SASR (Special Air Service Regiment) who has now switched professions as a mercenary. The first time we saw him, Rake jumped off a 30 meter high cliff, then sat for a long time at the bottom of the water like he was meditating. The scene carries a statement: He's a badass. A badass is injured, because at the same time, pieces of memory that blurred approached him. A sad memory of a child. There's no need to wait for the film to spell out to know that the boy is Rake's dead son.
Through Nik Khan (Golshifteh Farahani), Rake receives a job offer to save Ovi (Rudhraksh Jaiswal), the son of India's biggest drug lord, who is kidnapped by Bangladesh's biggest drug lord, Amir (Priyanshu Painyuli). In other words, a suicide mission. And Rake accepted it without thinking, provoking Nik, that he really wanted to die on the mission.
But take it easy. Rake could not die that easily, even if he wanted to. Rake is a one-man army that can cut down dozens of troops consisting of drug kingpin, police, until a handful of children who are trapped hard life on the streets of Bangladesh. Hemsworth's physical capacity cannot be doubted (Hey, he's the God of Thunder), but what makes it special is his success in humanizing Tyler Rake in the midst of his inhuman fighting abilities. Hemsworth was not an 80-90s action actor who struggled alone while putting on a relaxed face. He can be exhausted, also can be in pain.
Hemsworth is the perfect figure to realize Hargrave's vision of creating high-octane action that moves fast, brutally, full of painful moments that can make the viewer imagine the impact of beatings and collisions. Capitalize on the intense action, Extraction is able to maintain attention, even though the dramatic moments that Joe Russo tucked in between the battles are too empty to be able to add weight to emotions, and instead often reduce dynamics.
But there is no doubt that Hargrave's greatest achievement was of course shown as a single take sequence of almost 12 minutes, which, although not completely tidy (if you notice, some of the stitches seem quite clear), have astonishing complexity and scale. I thought the technique would stop after the chase on the streets of Bangladesh ended, but it didn't. Hargrave, assisted by Newton Thomas Sigel's camera arrangement (Drive, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Bohemian Rhapsody), invites viewers to enter multi-storey buildings, alternately entering one room at a time while changing character's focus, even jumping over the roof of the building.
The sequence is not limited to "just do not break up", but also filled with complex choreography that will create comparisons with the John Wick trilogy, also the details that make the background feel alive, from the community that responds, to vehicles in the middle of the road that often directly involved in a fight. Closed by a bombastic climax which also gave Randeep Hooda an opportunity (exhibiting Saju as the father of Ovi's son) to show off the toughness that is not inferior to Hemsworth, Extraction further emphasized that the future of the modern Hollywood action film genre lay in the hands of the heroes behind the scenes for as long as this is not getting enough attention.
