We spent half the saga! Fifth film of eight, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, 2007) happens in the hands of David Yates, a director who will remain at the helm until the end of the saga itself (unfortunately, I add). And there is also a new screenwriter, Michael Goldenberg, because the usual Steven Kloves was working on another project. Let me tell you: these changes are all felt in this film which is certainly the worst so far. I will never tire of saying that Chris Columbus had done an excellent job both with the philosopher's stone and with the chamber of secrets (even if I eat my hands to think that Warner Bros. did not make Rowling happy but as director for the first film wanted that genius of Terry Gilliam !!!); Cuarón had given us a pearl with his prisoner of Azkaban; and Newell had made an enjoyable film with his goblet of fire. This fifth film, however, is much lower than the previous ones. But let's go in order.
One would think that after such a serious event as the return of Lord Voldemort the world of magic would have woken up ... and no! The minister of magic Cornelius Fudge (Robert Hardy) is convinced that the whole story is a lie orchestrated by Dumbledore who would like to steal his armchair. And the Daily Prophet does nothing but support the thesis of the minister (the Rowling here does not spare some satire on the media servants of the masters, as he had already done with the character of the journalist Rita Skeeter played by Miranda Richardson in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire)! So for Harry things go really badly at school and he feels more alone than ever (not helped by a Dumbledore who avoids him at all costs), despite the fact that Ron and Hermione are always by his side. As if that were not enough, the ministry interferes with the education of our heroes by sending the cruel Dolores Umbridge (Imelda Staunton) to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts, indeed not to teach absolutely nothing!
So, to support the real Order of the Phoenix with the various Dumbledore, Moody, Lupine and Tonks (Natalia Tena), Sirius Black, the Weasleys ... who are trying to fight outside the school Voldemort and his followers, Harry and his companions found the army of Dumbledore to teach all the smartest students in the school some real and useful spells to fight death eaters. Of course, the adolescent troubles continue and finally Harry gets a kiss from the beautiful Cho, who is poor and feels guilty and has not yet passed the tragic death of Cedric! It all ends with a series of magical fights right at the ministry of magic where Voldemort will finally reveal himself to a large group of aurors and to Minister Fudge himself.
Where to start with the problems of this film? I will fly over the really inept direction (at least on the field overpasses Yates could have noticed, right?) And I will go straight to the heart of the matter: the script. The film doesn't seem to go anywhere for nearly two hours and then throws on the grandiloquent ending without having built anything before and therefore throws away the opportunity for one of the greatest emotions of the entire Harry Potter series, the death of Sirius Black, in a really cold and hasty scene. We see almost nothing of the Order of the Phoenix, we barely know who is part of it and what they do all day. We see some training scenes from the Dumbledore army and little else. Harry's problems are tackled badly and without depth (as for example in the two simple scenes with Seamus Finnigan, played by Devon Murray), although Daniel Radcliffe offers a good performance in which there is a certain growth in both the character and the actor . And then the key to the plot, the prophecy, you hardly understand what it says, nor who says it, nor why it is so important! Not to mention the photography that is increasingly dark, continuing the trend already started with the second film, in some moments it is difficult to understand what is happening on the screen!
Ok, ok, not everything is to be thrown away: the character of Luna Lovegood (Evanna Lynch) is memorable, as well as the thestrals, the final fight is spectacular to see, especially the duel between Voldemort and Dumbledore, Helena Bonham Carter is perfect for the part of the crazy Bellatrix Lestrange, and Staunton does an immense job on her very bad character making him unforgettable (amazing when she chases poor Trelawney played by her friend Emma Thompson). I'd say that's all. Fortunately in the next film Steve Kloves will return to the script and things will be a little better, but in my opinion the arrival of Yates did not do at all the saga of our favorite wizard, but apparently they are among the few to think of it since he was also entrusted with all the films of the next saga, Fantastic Beasts. As usual I show that I don't understand anything about cinema (this is also Daniel Radcliffe's favorite film, to say) ... Hello!
