When you can encompass a complicated story into an easily understood film without the need to feel cheap and "feed" the audience, then you are a great director. When you can change the audience's perception of the characters in the film through only one scene and do it many times without being forced or in a hurry you are obviously a great director. When you are able to make a 149-minute film without even a tedious moment and are able to maintain its tensile stability then you are a great director. When you are able to string layered twists and many "WOW" moments without ever feeling overlapping, obviously you are a great director. But if you succeed in doing all of the above plus other advantages that I haven't written yet, well then ... you are David Fincher! Gone Girl, which is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Gillian Flynn (who is also the author of the film's script), is proof that David Fincher really does not need to prove anything especially in handling complex thriller-criminals. He once did it through Zodiac (plot complexity at its best) to remake The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, and through Gone Girl Fincher to do it again.

One morning which is also the fifth anniversary of his marriage, Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) discovers his wife, Amy (Rosamund Pike) has disappeared. At first he suspected it was only part of the treasure hunt Amy always did every their wedding anniversary, but from the conditions at home, suspicions emerged that his wife had been kidnapped or even killed. The investigation began, various kinds of secrets and surprises began to be discovered. So far, I can write a synopsis. It will further damage the pleasure of the reader who has not and intends to watch the film. The film opens with a sentence narrated by Ben Affleck:
"When I think of my wife, I always think of the back of her head. I picture cracking her lovely skull, unspooling her brain, trying to get answers. The primal questions of a marriage: What are you thinking? How are you feeling? "What have we done to each other? What will we do?"
Conscious or not, the opening sentence has begun to play with the audience's perception. At a glance hearing the narration, it occurred to Nick is a husband who has the potential to become a psychopath because of confusion over marriage in critical condition. But looking at the expression of Rosamund Pike, the phrase "what are you thinking?" be a perfect depiction of his expression. I can't help but think that this woman is hiding something, something terrible, something mysterious. So who is crazy? Nick or Amy? Believe me, throughout the film the question also always revolves in my mind. Sympathy for the two characters will continue to move throughout the film, until they reach the stage both are gray figures. At first Gone Girl was seen "only" as a thriller about a husband looking for his wife but received a negative response from the public due to media interference. But in just one scene, everything changes. The first twist is present giving a surprise, changing perceptions, and just waiting for time until another surprise appears.
Surprise, questions and suspense are all things that make this film still interesting even though it runs for almost two and a half hours. Gone Girl is closely related to the figure of a psychopath, and the film goes like a psychopath. Crazy, do not hesitate to do extreme things, and unexpected. Every build-up moment raises questions, each answer raises curiosity about what kind of thing will happen next. As always, David Fincher's film is always filled with cold impressions in each picture. Plot never goes fast, but it also doesn't feel slow at all. From here the tension is built slowly. Imagine that you are alone in the middle of the night, and from a distance you hear a strange sound. The longer, slowly the sound kept coming closer and closer. Surely there are tensions that are present gradually until they reach a climax. But on the other hand there is curiosity and the question "what is it?". That's about how Fincher packaged this film. Plus the full scoring of the sounds of synth gripping the work of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who recently became Fincher's subscription, the more complete the dark atmosphere and the existing tension.
But Gone Girl is not only about mystery and suspense, there is also a strong satire present here. Besides the various reflections on marriage, what is most felt is the presence of the media. On one occasion Gillian Flynn stated that the presence of the media at the film's ending was to illustrate how they were the third person who played a big role in the story after Amy and Nick. Here we will see how strong the role of a media is in covering a story. The media can affect people's perceptions massively, can reverse these perceptions in an instant, not only the audience but the "doers" of the story can also be influenced by the media. As Tanner Bolt (Tyler Perry) said that the core of this case is no longer proving who is guilty and who is not, but who can win the hearts of the people. How to? Of course by using media exploitation in this case television. Gone Girl is a picture that it is true that often the media are heartless, but if used properly, the media can be our best "friends" to solve problems.
It is undeniable, at first glance the cast is somewhat doubtful. Ben Affleck is clearly not a bad actor, but I still feel he is inconsistent. Sometimes Oscar-worthy acting, sometimes bad. Especially now for the business of crazy thrillers, I can't help but think of Jake Gyllenhaal. Rosamund Pike is the same. His figure is thick with the aura of sweetheart and funny does it fit to portray Amy with her dualism? Maybe as Amy who is loved by the people she fits, but as a mysterious Amy? Moreover, added a name like Tyler Perry, doubts can not be avoided. Until the film was finished, I realized that I had presumptuously doubted Fincher's decision. Affleck with all his vulnerability and helplessness until Tyler Perry as a reliable lawyer, everything was perfect. But nothing can exceed Rosamund Pike.
I have a belief that when someone acts, and without doing many things outside (expressions, dialogues, great emotions) he can make the audience feel the complexity that is present, then it is extraordinary acting that is brought up really from within the actor. As I have written before, just through the look in his eyes, without dialogue or big expressions, I can be made to question many things. What does he think? What she wants? What does he feel? That is a complicated thing to play. On the other hand, through his actions, I easily knew how genius Amy was. Obviously if Amy really were near me, the horror would immediately be felt without the need for her to do anything. Amy is the female version of Jake Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler. But on the other hand he has a strong charm that will make a person easily bend his knees. That's what a scary person is. Gone Girl will stun you, make you mute, hit you and make fun of your perception. It's amazing.
