Perhaps many people underestimate Instant Family because of its status as a light comedy-drama. But this latest work by Sean Anders (Horrible Bosses 2, Daddy's Home, Daddy's Home 2) actually carries an important message about parenting. Even the comedy wraps do not strip the power of the story, because as Karen said (Octavia Spencer), "It's important to have a sense of humor in this (parenting)". Parenting can cause frustration, but laughter must not be removed from the process.
Instant Family invites us to laugh at the difficulty of parenting, while stirring emotions through touching family drama. The film is like a light version of Hirokazu Kore-eda's Shoplifters. Although the approach is very different, the two films both question, "What makes a family?". Is blood bonding an obligation? Or is the amount of love the most important thing?
The desire to hold a baby begins to arise in the minds of a married couple, Pete (Mark Wahlberg) and Ellie (Rose Byrne). But considering his age, Pete was worried that one day he would be too old once the child began to grow up. Even though it was jokingly presented, the topic was actually relevant. I myself often engage in similar conversation with my father. That is the reason behind their decision to adopt a child around five years old.
But their attention was snatched away by a 14-year-old teenager named Lizzie (Isabela Moner), who also has two younger siblings, Juan (Gustavo Quiroz) and Lita (Julianna Gamiz). Pete and Ellie ended up carrying three children. Both may make a living from the home repair business, but that does not automatically facilitate the work of "fixing" their three adopted children, who have a bleak past due to irresponsible mothers.
Days that were quiet were suddenly noisy, chaotic, and naturally stressful. Lita who is obsessed with potato chips is always hysterical, Juan is so sensitive that she can cry over something small, while Lizzie, well ... is a teenager. The majority of conflicts that illustrate the difficulty of the parenting process, were wrapped using a comedy cover with a presentation of the success of provoking very high laughter thanks to fresh joke material from manuscripts made by Sean Anders with John Morris (Hot Tube Time Machine, We're the Millers, Dumb and Dumber To).
Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne's portion reflects the division of the role of parents. Regardless of their ability to handle both elements, it appears that Byrne - with extraordinary talent in responding to all the ridiculous situations - supports a portion of comedy, while Wahlberg - armed with the charisma of a cool father figure - comes to warm our feelings (and her children).
Instant Family's greatest success lies in the ability to constantly switch between comedy and drama. At one point, the film can shake our stomachs through laughter, then a moment later gripping the chest through the emotion. The portrayal of his family ties is always strong, because Anders - who wrote this script based on his life story - knows, views regarding the child's relationship with parents as what effectively melts the heart. The common thread is always the same: an expression of love.
Instang Family is a matter of love, and in conveying its message, the film is fortunate to have Sanders' creativity in interweaving words, which rather than sounding cheap or too melancholy, is able to instantly pierce the feelings of the audience, while at the same time leading us to realize that every child on Earth worth loving. Instant Family is a rich treat, so even if it moves long enough for the size of a family-comedy drama (119 minutes), I won't mind if the story keeps rolling.
